Sustainability

We only exist if the planet exists

We have found a way to build a more sustainable future. To Gerdau, the ESG agenda (environment, social and governance), with the environmental component most prominent in our industrial activities, is a crucial factor in the discussions, planning, and everyday decision-making in our day-to-day activities.

    Environmental Strategy

The environment is a critical topic in Gerdau’s long-term strategy, risk management and resource allocation, for which reason we have clear directives and policies governing the topic as well as a series of initiatives to promote the sustainable development of our business activities. Our actions on this front include:

    Greenhouse gas emissions

∙ Carbon emissions are a key topic for our business. Gerdau’s emissions are closely discussed and monitored in its Strategy & Sustainability Committee, Board of Directors and Risk Committee.

∙ We now submit reports our operations in Brazil to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), reinforcing our commitment to combating climate change and to the transparent reporting of our environmental initiatives. We have undertaken commitments on climate change to reduce, by 2031, our greenhouse gas emissions, which already are below the average of the global industry. Learn more about our goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

    Circular Economy

∙ To Gerdau, the circular economy is part of a more sustainable path to the industry’s future. By engaging companies, consumers and society in general in the production chain and using our steel and co-products, we extend the life cycle and maintain innovation and technology at the center of our solutions.

    Recycling

∙ We are the largest recycler of ferrous scrap in Latin America.

∙ We remove obsolete materials from cities and reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions into the production of new steel products, while creating jobs and generating income by mobilizing an extensive network of scrap suppliers and traders.

    Solid waste reuse

∙ We use materials generated as secondary products during the steel production process to create co-products, which are used in various applications, such as road paving, railroad ballast, casting, cement and ceramics.

∙ In 2020, we reused around 78% of the solid waste generated by our production.

    Water conservation and use

∙ We invest in water management through water efficiency programs involving recirculation, which reduces not only the volume of water withdrawals, but also the volume of effluent discharges and their environmental impact.

∙ We also reuse up to 98% of the waste water of our production processes.

    Energy efficiency

∙ With an eye on the future and reinforcing its commitment to clean energy generation the use of renewable resources, Gerdau has energy efficiency projects that adopt solar power.

. We are constantly investing in new energy sources, such as photovoltaic farms in Minas Gerais (Brazil) and in Texas (United States).

    Forestry base

∙ We have a forestry base of over 254,000 hectares in Minas Gerais, Brazil, 91,000 hectares of which are set aside for biodiversity conservation.

∙ Our planted eucalyptus forests are a source of renewable raw materials for producing charcoal, which is used as a bioreducer in steel production. And over the next five years, our commitment to sustainability will increase even more, by expanding our forestry base by 20%.

Social Actions

Empowering people through entrepreneurship

Aware of the fundamental role in social development we play, we have carried out countless actions to promote the transformation of our local communities. In 2020 alone, we invested R$59.1 million in social actions that benefitted people in 66 cities in 10 countries.

Our social strategy focuses on three fronts:

  • Entrepreneurial education
Support for projects that foster and train current and future entrepreneurs. Always the center of our social projects, education continues to drive the engagement of our volunteer work by our employees.
  • Housing
Development of initiatives to foster entrepreneurship in offering solutions for the country’s housing challenge. We believe in the power of networking, which is why we forge partnerships with companies and social organizations to support housing for needy populations.
  • Recycling
We participate in entrepreneurship projects that foster recycling, the reuse of materials and conscientious consumption. We support initiatives to encourage the recycling of solid waste and improve the quality of life of people engaged in recycling.

Reforma Que Transforma

In 2020, we launched the Reforma Que Transforma program, Gerdau’s largest social project ever, to help transform the scenario of low-income housing in Brazil. With investments of R$40 million, we will renovate more than 13,000 vulnerable homes over the next 10 years, as of 2022. The action will provide better basic sanitation conditions, safety and a more comfortable life for over 50,000 people in the many communities and regions where we have operations.

In 2005, we created the Gerdau Institute to manage our social policies and directives through a council that defines our social strategy and monitors the projects’ results.

ESG and long-term compensation.

In 2021, ESG targets were included in the compensation of Gerdau’s senior executives through its Long-Term Incentive (LTI) Plan. The change stipulates that around 20% of the amount of the long-term bonus included in the variable compensation of executives is conditioned upon meeting ESG targets.

The measurement of this percentage of ESG targets is calculated based on two new indicators: percentage of women in leadership positions and greenhouse gas emissions. This is a commitment to the ESG agenda involving all leaders.
